Sallie Mae Receives Award
On November 29, in recognition of outstanding achievement in employee and community relations, Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez presented the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership to Sallie Mae and Weyerhaeuser Company. Sallie Mae received this Presidential Award for three college access programs developed by its philanthropic arm, the Sallie Mae Fund. The Fund is headed by BHEF member, Kathleen deLaski. MathMovesU Marks First Anniversary
MathMovesU, an innovative program designed and sponsored by Raytheon Company, marks its first birthday this month. Raytheon CEO, William H. Swanson, is a BHEF Executive Committee member and co-chair of BHEF's STEM Initiative. MathMovesU employs innovative techniques and input from students and teachers to make the study of math more interesting and relevant for middle school students. In what it views as another form of "R&D," Raytheon awarded more than $1M in scholarships and grants during the first year of the program to encourage "the development of the next generation of technical talent," says Swanson. Morgan Stanley Receives Award
Morgan Stanley is one of five winners of this year's Business Civic Leadership Center's 2006 Corporate Citizenship Award. Led by John Mack, Chairman & CEO and BHEF member, Morgan Stanley received the Award for its service to the broader community, the U.S. Community Service Award. Other BHEF members' companies -- McGraw-Hill Companies, GlaxoSmithKline, and The Boeing Company -- were finalists for the Corporate Citizenship Award. Read more.
