News from BHEF
As you might have read in the memo sent to members last week, the most recent BHEF meeting in Miami focused on BHEF's policy agenda in light of the new administration. Since the meeting, BHEF has sent letters outlining its priorities to President Obama and Secretary Duncan, and BHEF members and staff have continued to reach out to additional key administration officials. Our next member meeting -- June 15-16, 2009, in Washington, DC -- will continue to advance our policy agenda through further engagement with the Obama administration and members of Congress. You can find the letters online on our advocacy page.
Part of BHEF's STEM Initiative, the STEM Research and Modeling Network (SRMN) held its second convening on February 9, 2009, immediately before the member meeting in Miami. Over 50 participants engaged with Russell Hulse, Nobel Laureate (physics) and senior researchers Patrick Shields from SRI International and Steve Robbins from ACT about informal learning, teacher influences, and student interest in STEM. Findings are driving model updates prior to its open-source release later this spring. For more information, you can visit the new SRMN Web site.
New features related to strategic investments in education have been added to StrategicEdSolutions.org, a resource center developed as part of the CRI. Since its launch in September, the site has featured programs that have strong evidence of success in helping students succeed, but having such rigorous standards prevented us from acknowledging programs that, while lacking the necessary evidence of impact, nonetheless had great promise.
To be able to share as many strong practices as possible, we developed a section for "Programs to Watch" as a way to give these promising programs airtime while still keeping the site's ability to highlight programs that work. If you are familiar with a program that should be included on the site please consider submitting it through the submit your program page. New programs are being added regularly.
