News from BHEF

BHEF Executive Director Brian Fitzgerald will receive an honorary degree from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on May 16, 2009. He is an MCLA graduate and was named Distinguished Alumnus in 2000.

With new co-chairs David Jones, Jr. (chairman, Humana, Inc.) and Charlie Reed (chancellor, California State University System) at the helm, the College Readiness Initiative is making great progress in its member-led projects in Louisville, KY, and Philadelphia, PA. In Louisville, BHEF is guiding the development of a community-wide action plan that will highlight specific roles for community stakeholders -- including business and higher education -- to address the persistent P-16 educational attainment challenges in the region.

In Philadelphia, we are helping to link business leaders, including BHEF members from SCP Private Equity Management and KPMG, with local charter schools to improve best practices and strengthen the preparation of college-ready students. This effort has also involved the Mayor's office, the Philadelphia public school district, and concerned higher education leaders, including those at Drexel University.

BHEF and Raytheon were invited to present the Raytheon education model to Joel Klein, chancellor of New York City Public Schools. We are also driving toward a release of a new version of the model this summer.

Advocacy Update

At BHEF's 2009 winter meeting, members agreed upon a set of advocacy items related to the administration and congress' education priorities for BHEF to pursue. With these priorities in mind, BHEF is closely tracking education-related advocacy efforts that align with the College Readiness and STEM initiatives. This month's Advocacy Update provides news and analysis on the following items:

President Obama's FY10 Budget Request

  • Department of Education (ED)
    • P-12 Education
    • Higher Education
    • Education Research
  • Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education across agencies
  • Research and development (R&D) across agencies

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)

College- and Work- Ready Standards

Member News

Miami Dade College was the lead example in a New York Times article about the blurring line between community colleges and four-year universities.  BHEF member Eduardo Padrón pointed out that his institution has “an open-door policy, and we serve 62 percent of Miami-Dade district graduates who go to college.'”

There have been several articles and tributes to Drexel's late president, Taki Papadakis.  One article in a New Jersey paper puts particular emphasis on his history working to increase college access for minorities.
