News from BHEF
Mark your calendars for BHEF's 2010 Winter Meeting, hosted by the Raytheon Company, in El Segundo, Calif. The event will begin with a reception on Thursday, February 4, and end with a dinner on Friday, February 5. At this meeting we plan to focus on P-12 and higher-education domestic policy issues and to develop an advocacy agenda around key priorities. Two afternoon sessions will focus on higher-education degree production. BHEF member Roger Ferguson, who serves on the Commission on the Future of Graduate Education, will present the Commission's findings on trends that influence graduate degree production. We also will discuss key insights and findings related to STEM P-12 and higher education gained from developing and vetting the U.S. STEM Education Model, built by Raytheon and gifted to BHEF this past summer. Officials from the U.S. Department of Education, policy experts, and members from the California congressional delegation have been invited to speak at the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there! Special rates and other hotel information, as well as registration information, will be forthcoming shortly.
BHEF, as part of its College Readiness, Access, and Success Initiative (CRI), on October 20 released a case study, Improving Education Through Collaboration. The report, generously supported by a grant from GlaxoSmithKline, focuses on the success that can be achieved when K-12 and higher education work together to improve education outcomes, catalyzed by local business and political leadership. Based in California, the Long Beach Seamless Education Partnership can serve as a national model for improving alignment of the P-12, community college, and four-year education systems. BHEF member Charlie Reed, chancellor of the California State University System, is a long-time proponent of the partnership. BHEF on October 21 hosted the first in a series of STEM Research and Modeling Network (SRMN) Webinars. The event included the first live demonstration of the U.S. STEM Education Model since Raytheon donated it to BHEF in July, and explored the potential use of modeling to examine other critical issues that impact outcomes in STEM disciplines. Many thanks to viaSim President Chris White, who demonstrated a system dynamics modeling approach to examine federal student financial aid policies; and to onsite meeting participants Don Heller, Center for the Study of Higher Education, Penn State, and Bill Goggin and Megan McClean from the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance. Learn more about the model by visiting the SRMN Web site at http://www.stemnetwork.org/ or join the SRMN list-serve at http://groups.google.com/group/srmn.
As part of its advocacy agenda, BHEF on September 28 sent a letter to Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) urging that the Senate’s companion bill to the Student Access and Financial Responsibility Act (H.R. 3221) include an emphasis on increasing persistence and completion rates among the neediest students and among those in STEM disciplines.
