Washington, DC (March 12, 2010) — The Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF) today joined industry partners for the launch of the Business and Industry STEM Education Coalition (BISEC), of which BHEF is a founding member.
BISEC is a coalition of industries whose purpose is to align efforts to improve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in order to develop a future workforce that helps increase the nation’s economic competitiveness, sustain national security, and develop future jobs and employment specialties.
“We are pleased to be a founding partner of this important coalition. By businesses and industry groups working together, we can effectively build upon our individual organizations’ expertise and ongoing efforts to strengthen STEM education for all students,” says BHEF Executive Director Brian K. Fitzgerald. “We hope that BHEF and its members’ unique programs and commitment to STEM education will greatly enhance BISEC’s goals.”
Speakers at the event held at the National Academy of Sciences included BHEF member Rick Stephens, senior vice president of human resources and administration at The Boeing Company, and a member of the Business and Industry STEM Education Coalition Planning Committee; Chuck Vest, president of the National Academy of Engineering; and Norm Augustine, chair of the Rising Above the Gathering Storm Committee. The event was moderated by Miles O’Brien, journalist and host of “This Week in Space.”
For their leadership in STEM education, the coalition recognized Rep. Bart Gordon, D-Tennessee, chairman of the U.S. House Science & Technology Committee; and Rep. Vern Ehlers, R-Michigan, ranking member of the U.S. House Research & Science Education Subcommittee.
BISEC encourages a systemic change to STEM education in order for all children, youth, and adults to be scientifically literate and to have opportunities to pursue careers within the STEM fields. The coalition also encourages volunteerism and community involvement to foster an increase in individuals pursuing STEM career paths.
