NBCUniversal needs incoming engineers to have additional skills beyond those typically gained in a computer or electrical engineering bachelor’s degree program. BHEF, NBCUniversal, and Stevens Institute of Technology formed a partnership to develop a program for computer and electrical engineering students focused on media engineering and the evolving technology associated with the delivery of media content across platforms. This guide offers a summary of the process used by Stevens to develop an academic minor in media engineering as well as the associated curriculum. We hope that it will help other colleges and universities seeking to build similar programs by offering guidance on critical elements in curriculum planning and implementation. For media and entertainment companies that may be experiencing challenges in recruiting skilled engineers, this guide suggests a framework for engaging with appropriate institutions to develop academic programs that address workforce needs.
