Proceedings From Cities for Success: A BHEF Leadership Summit
Across the United States, civic leaders from all sectors are working avidly to identify education and workforce strategies that can bolster regional economic development. One notable success story is found in Louisville, Kentucky, where a broad coalition of local leaders identified powerful educational improvement strategies and then successfully mobilized the community around those strategies.
Washington -- The Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF) has received a $400,000 multi-year grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to partner with the University System of Maryland (USM) to expand and scale opportunities for Maryland students in the growing field of cybersecurity.
With increasing frequency, leaders in higher education, business, and government are calling for expanded educational opportunities to improve the skills of the U.S. workforce. “Learn and Earn” programs offer one channel for ameliorating some of the challenges that are of concern. Learn and Earn programs involve partnerships between postsecondary education institutions and employers to provide opportunities for adults to attend college while maintaining their employment.
One such example is Metropolitan College, an educational partnership founded in 1998 among United Parcel Service, Inc.
This booklet details BHEF's Regional Workforce Projects to date (June 2012), with information on partners, sectors, and key activities. Each project showcases the commitment and urgency by businesses and higher education institutions to confront critical workforce challenges in their regions by strategically connecting companies’ core competencies with undergraduate education to increase persistence of students, particularly women and minorities, toward degrees and careers in high-demand areas.
